What do you know about the INFP with ADHD? Attention Deficit (Hyperactive) Disorder can be easier to spot in other personality types but it’s a lot harder with the INFP Personality. This is because they already exhibit similar traits and if not properly analyzed, it could be a complete case of misdiagnosis.

If an INFP isn’t properly analyzed, they can easily be misdiagnosed. This is especially common in children. As you know, ADHD is mostly common in children but it extends into adulthood. 

Can INFPs Have ADHD?

ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. It can affect just about anyone. It is commonly diagnosed in children but this doesn’t exempt adults either. This disorder tends to affect the human interaction with the world and one common factor is that it causes lack of attention or difficulty paying attention. 

This means the INFP can in fact have ADHD. There are various symptoms that overlap between being an INFP and having ADHD. The most common being hyper-impulsiveness, forgetfulness, Inattentiveness etc. Let me break this down.

Common INFP And ADHD Traits 

Here are common INFP traits that could be mistaken for ADHD.

Hyperactivity

I’ve met a good number of INFPs who are pretty hyperactive. They can be the one who interrupts conversations mid sentence and not in a bad way but to get their thoughts out there. They are known for their multitasking activities anyway so this shouldn’t come as a surprise. 

Hence another reason why they could be misdiagnosed as ADHD as this is also a common trait.

Inattentiveness

Generally, INFPs find concentrating incredibly difficult. Their minds wander as much as it can. Paying attention to little things can seem like a chore. They almost always have more than one thought on their mind at any given time. 

This is further amplified by their need for daydreaming and multitasking. This makes them carry out numerous tasks without actually completing any of it. They also get easily bored and distractions is a way to keep them interested and active.

INFPs can only concentrate when they are completely curious about a topic and even that could go either way. Although they find it hard to pay attention, they mostly always come back to it when they can. People who suffer from ADHD find it difficult to pay attention too. 

Multitasking

As mentioned above, the INFP is always multitasking. They aren’t always great at it but they’d do it anyways. They enjoy multitasking because staying at a place and doing a single activity seems more mentally draining. No matter the activity they are carrying out, they have an accompanying one right there.

Multitasking is also a common trait for people with ADHD. 

Forgetfulness 

INFPs can be very forgetful. They forget as almost as quickly as they take in information. Mostly because they are thinking about a lot at the same time. Daydreaming is one thing that can distract them constantly from reality as they spend so much time in their heads and tend to skip reality ever so often.

Mental and Emotional Struggles 

It can be hard to stay motivated when you have the above listed problems especially with concentrating long enough to get anything done. The INFP shares this trait that could seem like ADHD. They lose interest in activities which can make them reluctant to start anything. 

The INFP can also struggle emotionally because of this. And unlike most personality types, they do not mind showing their emotions albeit disorganized. So how can you identify adhd in an INFP? 

Common Traits To Look Out For

Although these traits can easily be confused with being an INFP, here are some common traits of ADHD

  • Struggling to complete a task and starting another.
  • Easily bored with all kinds of relationships. 
  • Struggling to pay attention.
  • Easily distracted and can be lost daydreaming 
  • Always multitasking even when terrible at it. 
  • Suffering from anxiety and/or depression because of not meeting up to tasks and calls.
  • Either extremely hyperactive or completely withdrawn.

Some of the best ways an INFP with adhd can cope is through making lifestyle changes. Getting an accountability partner, planning ahead, meditations and exercises are great ways to help too.
